GRADATION

This site-specific dance piece brings together two dancers and a staircase. Not only did the staircase set the composition and movement while creating the piece, but it also gave inspiration to the emotional and psychological exploration.

Gradation, ranking and rating are a social as well as a personal daily action. We constantly compare ourselves to others while society and its institutions rank us in every phase and stage of our lives.

Consisting of steps that either go up or down, the iron staircase, an indifferent cold scale, is a metaphor to that reality. The two performers dance the gradation dance that evokes rivalry and competition in a never-ending struggle to move upwards, a race during which we scarify compassion and kindness.
